We have decided to tackle the issues surrounding a lack of awareness towards the importance of conserving resources and proper waste management. Although most people are aware of the implications of improper waste management, they still remain negligent towards how they manage their waste. As proof of that statement, Malaysia has a recycling rate of 17.5%, a statistic significantly lower than our European counterpart ( >60%). We believe that this is largely due to the hassle associated with managing waste properly. As a result, we have conceptualized an app that allows for people to adopt and practice positive waste management habits by easing the recycling and waste management process.
We believe that this factor allows for a more sustainable future because good waste management leads to less waste and conserves precious resources. The conservation of resources is important because using them recklessly may exhaust them and would mean that the future generations would have to compromise. Some resources take time in their formation such as fossil fuels and using them recklessly is going to be harmful for the environment. Therefore the conservation of resources is imperative.
As of now, the project is under mockup phase. Hence, figma is used to to build the demo/proto and the UI. The plan for the development of the app is to begin with Kotlin as the language used for the app in android studio. Next, CloudVision API will be used for image detection.
Once the user scan an item with the app, they are given a NASA fact based on the item on the topic of recycling, pollution & environmental.
