Sustaining Our Planet for Future Generations

There is concern worldwide that environmental issues we face today will have an impact on future generations. Your challenge is to create a way to communicate the importance of environmental responsibility to people of all ages.

Define the meaning of Sustainability to people of all ages: Creating awareness, Suggesting Solutions

Summary

Team Name: MadLadsChallenge Name: Sustaining Our Planet For Future Generations Number of Members:06Objective of Challenge: To create a way to communicate the importance of environmental responsibility to people of all agesOur Solution: Internet connectivity is growing like wildfire nowadays. And as a result more and more people are finding social media a very reliable means of communication. Relying on the same belief we propose the use of Social Media to communicate the importance of environmental responsibility to people of all ages.

How We Addressed This Challenge

For more than a trillion years, Earth has been a splendid home for all including- humans, plants, animals and numerous microorganisms, etc . But in the past couple of years, various human activities have turned our home into a hostile environment which makes life for the future generation even more difficult.

Madlads is working to solve this issue and educating everyone regardless of their age. After a ton of discussion social media proved to be the most effective way of spreading awareness due to its popularity amongst all age groups.

We believe that by educating everyone damages caused by catastrophe can be minimized. Therefore, we started our own twitter account to educate everyone about how important sustainability and sustainable development are. The handle goes with the username @Madlads4 .

Apart from the twitter handle, we've also made an interactive video in hope to reach those who don't have access to social media.

The entire team of MadLads believes that it’s the little efforts that add up to achieve something unimaginable and surreal. The least you can do is support all such environment friendly practices and initiatives taken by your government, municipality or any group of environmentalists. Spread the word!

How We Developed This Project

Climate change is big and it is real.We are the youth and we are the ones observing the climate changing so rapidly hence we are the ones who should take action and we decided to choose a topic which could help in preventing climate change and spreading awareness about sustainable approach.Hence we decide to choose this challenge(Sustaining Our Planet For Future Generations). And the choice worked for us. Spreading awareness was was something much more important for us than completion of project. The team worked with too much enthusiasm for the challenge. Difficulties do come in your way when you try to do something but they are a part of it as well so we faced all the difficulties bravely and most importantly together and tried to stay focused and it worked for us, we eventually grew much more attentive towards the spreading awareness and that's all we achieved from participating in Space Apps Challenge. We enjoyed a lot and would like to participate further as well.

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

We mainly used resources provided by the Space Agency NASA.

Increase in rates of Carbon emissions.

Global atmospheric Carbon dioxide was 414 ppm in 2020 a new record high. The annual rate of increase in atmospheric Carbon dioxide over the past 60 years is about 100 times faster than previous natural increases.

Warming Ocean.

The ocean has absorbed much of the increased heat (due to global warming), with the top 100 meters (about 328 feet) of ocean showing warming of more than 0.6degrees Fahrenheit since 1969.

Rise in Sea Level.

Global sea level has increased about 8 inches in the last century. The rate in the last two decades, however, is nearly double that of the last century and is accelerating slightly every year.

Decreased Snow Cover.

According to the satellite observations, the amount of spring snow cover in the Northern Hemisphere has decreased over the past five decades and that the snow is melting earlier.

Glacial Report.

Glaciers are retreating almost everywhere around the world - including in the Alps, Himalayas, Andes, Rockies , Alaska and Africa.

Shrinking Ice Sheets.

The Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets have decreased in mass. According to the scientific calculations, Greenland lost an average of 279 billion tons of ice per year between 1993 and 2019, while Antarctic lost about 148 billion tons of ice per yer during the same time period.

Ozone depletion

The ozone levels stabilized by the mid-1990s and began to recover in 2000. Recovery of ozone is projected to continue over the next century and the ozone hole is expected to reach pre-1980 levels by around 2075.

Global Temperature Rise

According to the new survey, the annual change in global temperature is about 0.99 degrees Celsius ( or 1.78 degrees Fahrenheit), a change driven largely by increased carbon dioxide and other human-made emissions into the atmosphere. According to the survey, it has been estimated that most of the warming occurred in the past 40 years, with the 6 warmest years.

This is the data we used in our project.
