Sustaining Our Planet for Future Generations
Let us compete over who will contribute more towards sustaining the planet for future generations.
Summary
We developed a web app to address the challenge and bring all age groups together in contributing towards sustaining earth for future generations. We have incorporated a rewarding system and made a gaming spirit in it for the user to aim at sustaining mother earth. We have also created separate portals for the industries and NGOs to login. We have tried to connect the NGOs with the Industries.
How We Addressed This Challenge
What is it?
The purpose of the challenge is to drive youth more towards sustaining and create more awareness in adults and senior citizens. United Nations have defined 17 goals that aim towards sustainable development. In our app, we incorporated something for each goal and also took into consideration the disabled and unenlightened section.
Why is it important?
The Sustainable Development Goals are the blueprint for achieving a better and more sustainable future for all. They address the global challenges we face, including poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, peace and justice.
What does it do?
- While registering with our web app it offers three choices.
1st whether one wants to register as an individual,
2nd to register as NGO and
3rd to register as Industry.
- Then a survey/form will appear. Individual and industry can fill up that survey and they will get a score of their contribution towards the environment.
- Now for the individual, we have created a game like thing in which the one who will top the leaderboard in contributing more towards the planet will get a badge and a certificate.
- There is also a pledge that we have created. One can take the pledge to sustain planet earth for future generations. An email will be sent regarding this too.
- There is an articles section for the user to learn more about sustainable development, latest inventions, news etc., that's going on for improving our planet earth.
- There is an embedded carbon footprint calculator that will calculate ones daily carbon footprint and will dynamically plot its graph.
- We have developed an IoT based sensor which will take users daily water consumption who'll embed it in their water tank and plots its graph dynamically.
- For the fun part, we have linked NASA's quiz in our web app too.
- We thought of a special thing and called it Nature Book. Here one can post and flaunt with one's good deeds, done towards nature.
- We have embedded the NASA's podcast in our web app especially for those who can't read or see.
- We have included keyboard navigation for visually impaired people. Pressing Alt key will make the voice read the menu for navigation.
What do we hope to achieve?
- We wish to create a gaming spirit among the youth in contributing towards sustaining our planet for future generations.
- We want to include one n' all that's why we have incorporated podcasts, keyboard navigation, and much more.
How We Developed This Project
What motivated us?
Being the country's youth we all were aware and concerned regarding the earth degradation issues. That is why we thought of coming up with a solution for that. We observed that more than 50% of the population are addicted to games, from there it struck us that we can make sustaining, rewarding by creating a competitive spirit in it like a game. So we developed this credit-based system and to include all we added some extra features for each age group.
How did we make it?
- We used the Django framework for the backend. Picked up a simple template and modified it a lot according to our needs for the front end. For making the water tank sensor we have used ultrasonic sensor + Esp8266 module.
- As a reward for the winner, we will plant a tree in their name prior solution we have. Other than this we are hoping to fund their water tank IoT sensor.
What problems and achievements did your team have?
Data scrapping from NASA's site was a difficult task. Also, we faced a lot of issue in embedding the resources.
Further we wish to develop it more which will include adding challenges, speech to text translation, language translation, android version, adding sensors to record electrical energy consumption etc.

We tried embedding NASA's quizzes but that was not possible so we redirected them there.
