Sustaining Our Planet for Future Generations

There is concern worldwide that environmental issues we face today will have an impact on future generations. Your challenge is to create a way to communicate the importance of environmental responsibility to people of all ages.

Sustainable Future for Tajikistan

Summary

We want to help international organizations that cooperate with local authorities in collecting and analyzing data for better water recourses , forest and agricultural land. Being one of the poorest countries in central Asia and depending on water recourses for power supply and agricultural needs, Tajikistan will suffer from effects of climate change. Harsh terrain and lack of infrastructure makes it very hard to collect data for measuring this effects. To be informed and take actions in timely manner data collection and analyzing procedures must be organized.

How We Addressed This Challenge

We can provide all involved organizations with new layer of data for weather, climate, and environmental monitoring including precipitation, lake and river surface temperatures, atmospheric temperature and humidity, glaciers movement, forest fires, vegetation analysis, soil erosion as well as search and rescue.

How We Developed This Project

Our team was inspired by current developments in machine learning and by availability of out-of-the-box solutions by cloud services providers. We used NASA EarthData, Earth on AWS and Google Earth. We learned how to use convolutional neural networks for processing satellite imagery in Python. Our problem was lack of computing power. We exceeded our limit on AWS Free Tier account.

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

We used open.nasa.gov to explore available data and code repositories that we can use for our project.

We registered an account on https://search.earthdata.nasa.gov to explore this service.

We watched webinars and read documentations of how we can use data for our project from https://earthdata.nasa.gov/
