Smart bin
Summary
The smart bin is a bin that the user enters the garbage, receives points. It would help in spreading awareness among people about recycling and avoid plastic in places that can't be recycled. The project would help the recycling factories in decreasing the plastic pollution and motivate them to recycle the waste so it would reduce the plastic. The user would enter his card to choose to insert your garbage program. The machine would allow him to insert his garbage and weigh it and convert its mass to points that would be changed into cash or promotion.
How We Addressed This Challenge
We developed a machine like an ATM and called it " smart bin " but it has some differences.
It is important because it will help in all some problems, namely:
1- The problem of throwing garbage on the street, as ( plastic ). There are people who throw plastic into the seas or rivers. This harms marine organisms before humanity. Those who burn plastic cause many diseases.
2- The problem of people who sleep on the street and have no money.
3- This machine will help in recycling.
- in " Smart bin " You will put waste or cans that can be recycled and the machine will classify them according to their type and recycle them, at the same time they will give you money or send points to your account that you can use later to buy government products at discounts.
- when you put the waste that can be recycled and this machine will classify the waste inside it, whether it is cans, paper, glass, ... etc.
Once the waste is placed inside it, two options will appear on its screen: Offline or Online, People who are not financially capable and need money quickly, or those who sleep in the street or who do not have the Internet with their mobile phones will press the option "Offline". As soon as they click on this word, the machine will produce money for them according to the amount of waste they put in. Those who will click on the "online" option must have taken an ID from the website that we will create in order to write the ID on the machine. Once they write the ID automatically, the machine will take one of two steps:
A- The first step, you will receive points on your ID on the Web site that you can use later to buy government products at appropriate discounts (according to our agreement with the companies that will adopt the project)
B - If you do not want to take the offers and discounts, you will click on the word "No", and the money will be transferred automatically to your account in the bank or financial center.
Finally, We hope to achieve cleanliness in the streets, so if we achieve cleanliness, we can avoid many diseases that may come to people because of the waste that is burned or metal cans that cause wounds to the hands of cleaning workers and the spread of germs, which makes them sick, we also hope to increase people's awareness of the importance of throwing waste in Rubbish or putting it in the machine that we made, when it is recycled, people will benefit better than throwing it on the street. We hope for a clean, healthy, and well-formed country.
How We Developed This Project
All the world suffers from environmental problems. After, searching intensely about this problem. We found that overpopulation causes many of these problems, such as pollution, plastic impacts, etc... So, we decided to choose this challenge to teach people more about the negative impacts of overpopulation. We want to develop our project (smart bin) by building a website to add the points to everyone’s card that would be related to the machine or an account on this website. After a while, we can develop the website for an application. We also will make deals with companies and factories that will help in garbage recycling, We also will add different chambers for different types of waste. While implementing our project, we used sketch up for the software 3D model. We used the C programing language to make the program of this smart bin. For the hardware, We will use a microcontroller this will control what’s inside the machine that will open the place we will insert the garbage inside, etc. We will put a scanner in the place we insert then card inside, this scanner will know all the data about the person. The data will go to the microcontroller that will add the points of the garbage to the card, We will also make a password to the door that people will take the garbage to recycle from, We will attach to the door sensors that will call us if there something wrong in the password or the machine, So our future hardware will be secure.
While implementing the project, we face some problems like we don’t have very high skills in programming or 3D designing. So, we chose to sketch up as it is easier to use than other programs like AutoCAD or Solid Works, we were under pressure because of the deadlines. However, We could pass this problem by team-work and encouraging each other. We achieve many goals as we pass these problems together, as we learned more about team-work and everyone’s skills in different ways, we thought about a creative idea like this that is an achievement, so all of us achieves something from this competition.
How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project
Pollution is a serious problem. It’s everywhere, numbers are increasing. According to New York times magazine, pollution has increased by a rate of about 5.5%. It might seem a small number. However, it has a great impact on the years. The most popular and chronic one is plastic. Plastic harm earth: land, seas, and the air. The ocean is now full of plastic and microplastic. According to NASA resources, in 2050 the weight of the plastic in the ocean will be equal to the weight of the fish. It’s fatal for aquatic life where they would eat leading to suffocation till death so. They need our help. After using NASA and CSA resources, we have known that recycling is the most efficient way to get rid of plastic in a way to help our planet to survive. However, if we didn’t recycle this plastic there would be a lack of materials in the future especially in: oil and gas. For example: in Canada, about 90% of there plastic originated from them, and our usage of plastic is in continuous increase because of the spread of the single-use gadget and plastic packaging. After searching about the problem with the help of NASA, CSA, New York times data, and reports to help us in understanding the issue more to guide us in finding the solution. We have thought of a way to increase the recycling process. So, we have thought of our idea to help factories in recycling and spread awareness among people on how recycling is important.
