We developed a webpage that has the goal of raising awareness about climate change. On it, the audience can find four stories of animals impacted by climate change. Through the stories, the website helps the audience understand the deadly effects of climate change and familiarize themselves with the steps they can take to battle it. The website tells the story of: an orangutan living in a rainforest that is being cut down for the production of palm oil, a frog that peacefully lives in another rainforest, in which, one day, a massive fire occurs due to the rising temperatures, a polar bear living on the melting ice of Antarctica, and a fish that discovers a plastic polluted area on one of her sea travels. The stories are short, yet very touching, they are targeted at a younger audience, as we believe that even the smallest step, by the youngest person, can make a change. After the audience reads through each story, there is simple information on how to reduce your carbon footprint, and battle climate change. We hope that our web page will be used as a educational tool to teach children about the difficult topic of climate change.
We are concerned with the problem of climate change and the lack of appropriate education about it, that is why when we noticed that there was a challenge of raising awareness about environmental concerns, we felt that it would be a great opportunity to create a tool aiding the education of children about climate change. At first, we thought of creating an app, a educational game for kids, as we thought that it would be the best way to connect with the younger generation, but when we realised the level of our coding skills, we decided to settle on making a web page. We used Python, when we had the overall idea of what we are going to create, we switched to HTML, JavaScript and CSS. We spent some time searching for the right software to use, and decided to use Repl.it, as it was the most familiar to us and suited our needs well. We did have many problems as we are just beginner coders, with almost no experience. It took us some time to figure out how to activate the buttons and create the beginning "What is your name?" prompt. What we created did not turn out how we wanted it to, as we had quite high expectations, and when we realised what we can or can't do, we had to readjust our plan. Although we still are happy with what we created since it was a great learning experience and a great opportunity.
