Summary

Eco-Savior- An interactive application designed and developed in order to create awareness amongst people of all age groups. The application addresses the concern through its features like daily live quizzes, unique games, knowledge repository, virtual simulators, informative videos and community building. It is a gaming environment where the users engagament in games affects his score, which helps the user redeem relevant real-life rewards. The application feature of the knowledge repository encompasses a range of enriching content in different forms. All in all, it is a complete environmental awareness platform for all forms of learners, young or old, visual, auditory or kinesthetic.

How We Addressed This Challenge

Our solution to this problem statement aims at increasing environmental awareness amongst individuals of all age groups and who are any type of learners so as to make them realize the impact that their actions might have on the environment. We propose to do this through gamification. 


Why gamification?, 

The global gaming market was valued at USD 151.55 billion in 2019 and is expected to reach a value of USD 256.97 billion by 2025, registering a CAGR of 9.17% over the forecast period (2020 – 2025). We came across a report titled ‘Gaming – India Story’ which states that the online gaming industry is growing at a Compounded Annual Growth Rate of 22%. During Covid-19, visits to online gaming websites or apps rose by 24%.


Our solution would include building an application “ECO-SAVIOUR” with the following features :


I.Interactive series of games : Designed and developed in order to create awareness amongst people of various age groups.


The games included would be :


Fun puzzles : 9-cell puzzles with pictures of different eco-friendly environmental sustainability equipment/material with hints to solve it.

Spot the wrong Act : A picture/ video will be displayed, from which the user has to pick the environmentally hazardous act from the options displayed.

Crossword : The crossword is a good leisure game for our senior players. The crossword will be designed to inculcate the values of sustainability & green initiatives by having environment-related words over the crossword.

Eco-Chess: Senior Citizens will have an eco-friendly chess game called Eco Chess. The player will play against the system where his moves will affect the Oxi credit. Wrong moves will reduce Oxi Credits.

Eco-avengers in which Each Avenger will be assigned as a saviour of one aspect of nature,The more a person is environmentally aware of that aspect, the respective Eco-avenger will be assigned as an Avatar to the person. example Hulk for greenery and forests and a person will be given a chance to answer a few questions. 

Build your ECO-City : A game where the creativity of building an entire city is left to the discretion of the user. The more environmentally sustainable the city is, the more Oxi credits the user will gain.

GREEN PATTI -

The cards are picturized with various environment related issues.

For each round players can lay the cards which are related to the environmental issues related to the top card of the deck which is turned over.


II.Rewards in the application in the form of Oxi-credits (which are worth conversion in real time money), give aways of relevant vouchers of e-commerce and online business platforms, and the prestigious Green Wall of fame.


III.Eco-quiz section

This section displays quizzes on various environment related topics. There will be a flagship live quiz everyday based on current environmental issues which would also have prize money for winners. 


IV.Eco-Community feature: 

Here, People can share their experiences and , initiatives and thoughts in the form of blogs, eventually building a virtual community where they can find others, and can plan eco-friendly activities and initiatives. 


V.Eco-simulator:

This feature takes the user’s daily routine work as input and gives an environmental impact of those activities as output may be in terms of may be carbon footprint / PM particle emission index, etc. It also has a ‘ Make me eco-friendly’ option in order to optimize your daily routine.

This can also be used by industrial organisations to predict and possibly help reduce their carbon footprint. 


VI.Knowledge Repository (Eco-resources) :

This contains various articles/ blogs etc in order to gain information regarding environmental sustainability. This option is also linked with the social community features.


VII.VIRTUAL VIDEO TOUR

Video tour of the application to make navigation easier for the technologically challenged.


VIII.Howcasts :

Audio and video podcasts on different topics related to environment sustainability.


For this application, we have a Go-to-market strategy which is:

Launching this application into the market using influencers, social media, etc. referrals, rewards, launching different campaigns, collaboration with market leaders etc. which will help us to reach a wider audience through its engaging content.


-         Eco-saviour is designed in such way that the content is more appealing , activities are more engaging , the rewards that user gets is more attractive so basically this app has more User engagement period which ultimately leads to create awareness .Eco-saviour app will have direct impact on country's “Environmental Performance Index (EPI)” . also this will help in order to increase the "Environmental Awareness Index" 


We are also utilizing other tools mentioned above to increase awareness with integration of Eco-savior. So Eco-saviour is tool for all in order to engage, enjoy, acknowledge and act. we believe that “ECO-SAVIOUR” is not just an application, but a platform for collaboration and engagement to make our planet a better place to live in for us all.

How We Developed This Project

Sustainability is in the spotlight ever since humanity has burnt a hole in the ozone layer. The causes of depletion of the ozone layer are attributed to the neck snapping pace of industrialization & human population.

Owing to these two major reasons, humanity has been in the spree of using natural resources at its disposal at a tremendous pace. Unfortunately, these resources are scarce in nature and will culminate in the near future.   

           At this pace of consumption, humanity has nearly no resources to offer for the future generations, which is a grave picture to imagine. Fortunately, humanity has taken cognizance of this concern and has taken steps to curb the exploitation of the precious resources.

With corporates coming up with a triple bottom line approach (People, Profit, Planet), corporates have finally devised ways to frugally use the wealth of resources.  However, the awareness of the same hasn't reached the common individual. They fail to identify that the small acts also deplete the environment, one person at a time.

OUR APPROACH:

 Elements of Environmental Awareness (EA) (Partanen-Hertell et al., 1999)


General model on Environmental Awareness (EA) leading to proenvironmental behaviour (PEB), abbreviated here as EAPEB model (Harju-Autti, 2013). 


SITUATION: Lack of awareness was taken into cognizance & decided to come up with an all encompassing approach to tackle the problem.

TASK: Make an all round solution which can be accessed by everybody & develop it as a fun and learn activity.

ACTION: The application developed provides addresses the concern with a gamified environment. The tasks assigned are specific to increasing the awareness towards carbon emissions from various individual activities, plastic consumption, resource consumption etc. All these activities have been encapsulated in an interactive gamified environment which makes the experience immersive and rewarding at the same time. 

RESULT: EARTH SAVIOR: An interactive application designed & developed in order to create awareness amongst people of all age groups. The application addresses the concern through day to day activities, quizzes & fun games in a gamified scenario.

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

We are very thankful to NASA as they shared very informative data sets with us. This data plays major role in our solution as Gamification needs creative content and that content needs some baseline or basic information. So we get all the relent information regarding climate change, biodiversity, Global warming, greenhouse gas emission on this data resources.

For regular quizzes in application this is very important. Moreover it will play major role during our live quiz. In order to set activities for kids information from https://climatekids.nasa.gov/ helped us a lot.

We also incorporate the some data from NASA resources in our games e.g. In Eco-simulator which takes your daily routine as input and will give you reparations of your actions on dashboard. So in order to show the impact on environment we have used different finding from https://nca2014.globalchange.gov/highlights/report-findings/future-climate e.g. Projected Changes in Soil Moisture in area of user etc. Also our Knowledge repository and Community feature will directly linked with https://climate.nasa.gov/ so user can get in depth knowledge about topic.

Data & Resources

We used data available NASA platforms along with the data available on the internet.

We referred some Games, hands-on activities, videos and articles about Earth and space science.

Our project contains many awareness videos which we have referred from some youtube links.

We also referered to direct links to the best articles freely available on internet and NASA platforms which aim to increase awareness towards environomental issues.
