Sustaining Our Planet for Future Generations

There is concern worldwide that environmental issues we face today will have an impact on future generations. Your challenge is to create a way to communicate the importance of environmental responsibility to people of all ages.

Vision of the world-Maintaining nature in a fun and learning way

Summary

Is it important to protect nature? Since decades, we consider nature conservation a serious topic, However, with the support of people of all ages, we can hold nature in an exciting way. We have created a multipurpose application where they can use a camera/gallery image to find the alternatives of the day-to-day required items and can also see the amount of pollution caused by a similar item and can find the alternative for the same. Soon, detecting items and seeking alternatives for the same will become a fun learning task. They can also share the amount of pollution they have saved, after selecting the environment-friendly item and can also win rewards.

How We Addressed This Challenge

What did you develop?

We have developed a mobile application that suggests the alternatives of the daily used harmful products which leave a hazardous impact on nature and the environment. The application enables the user to capture a picture or use the existing ones from the mobile’s gallery. The objects will then be detected and recognized using Google ML Vision Toolkit. The alternative of the same will be suggested along with the pollution caused by both- the object detected and the alternative, which makes it easy for the user to compare them. It also gives us the feature of tracking the location of the mobile phone and informing about the pollution causing elements at the same location. One can also write notes in the To-Do tab. This tab will also have the tasks that the user is supposed to do by adopting the greener replacements. The user needs to register and securely log in to the application before availing of the above-mentioned benefits.

Features:-

  • Secure login
  • Compatible with the Android devices
  • Simplicity and user-friendly
  • Good performance
  • Highly scalable

Why is it important?

Family is the most important thing in the world and to save world nature conservation is important

For decades we thought conserving nature requires a serious approach and we conduct seminars, case studies on them, But these don’t create a long-lasting impact on the people of all ages. We tried to make them realize the importance of trees in some more exciting way. We also club different case study data(Study summary) for our project and found that nature conservation can become much easier in times of lockdown as people spent most of their time on digital gadgets, so why not use this fact for the same. If we do not take a baby step to conserve nature than it will become difficult for our future generation to sustain on the planet earth. In India, we often call earth as our mother (धरती माता) so it should be our duty to save our world. Once people start using such types of applications than spreading awareness among the people of all ages will also become easier.

How does it work?

The following figure shows our application's simple working flow:-

What do you hope to achieve?

Happiness is that state of consciousness which proceeds from the achievement of one's values

We hope to achieve a greener world where all the creatures live in utter peace and harmony, a better place for our future generations to stay. A balanced ecosystem is very important for the sustenance of the world. An ecosystem where its members are dependent on each other but none of them harms the other counterparts just for their benefit and luxury. We want our Mother Earth to be back in a healthy condition just like earlier days.

How We Developed This Project

What inspired your team to choose this challenge?

Our mentor faith on us is the biggest source of inspiration for us.

According to the reports, our world has become one degree Celsius warmer since the start of the industrial revolution. Our winters and summers are becoming warmer and warmer. Sea levels are rising 3 mm per year. Carbon Dioxide concentration has reached a level of 415.26 ppm. All these alarming facts have inspired us to create the project and suggest greener alternatives for the everyday used of harmful things. These statistics prove that the world needs a change and we want to be the change that we want to see in the world. The data above shows that mother earth needs our support and participating in the event is one of the way to conserve environment.

What was your approach to developing this project?

Stay committed to your decisions, but stay flexible in your approach - by Tony Robbins

We followed a flexible approach to solve our problem. We equally divided our works into groups and maintained a strict deadline to complete our specific task. We then together all our work into a single document after discussing the same with our mentors and gather feedback about the same from our friends and family members.

What problems and achievements did your team have?

Achievements :-

  1. Under the guidance of Prof. Mayur Sevak we secured 3rd position is National level(India) COVID-19 Ideathon organised by AICTE ( All India Council For Technical Education ) and FORGE incubator.
  2. Vedant Dokania and Pratham Barve collabarately submitted two research paper titled :- “QR CODE BASED SMART PARKING SYSTEM” in IEEE digital Explorer and “ MULTIPURPOSE COVID-19 APPLICATION TO TRACK PEOPLE AND SUPPLY NECESSITIES AT HOME” in ICREST event.
  3. Krushil Mehta also submitted research paper titled :- SMART ELECTRONIC WIRELESS COMPANION FOR MEDICAL ASSISTANCE “ in ICREST.
  4. We also got funds from SSIP (Student Startup Innovation Program ) of around 50k (INR) for project development.
  5. Also we are two times Gujarat Industrial Hackathon finalist (2019 and 2020).

Problems :-

We face several problems during project development. All of us live in different places so it's become difficult for us to discuss, connect, and work together. During our previous hackathon experience, we all work together sitting at the same place which boosts our confidence and it's also very convenient to discuss the small problems we face. But because of the global pandemic, it's not possible. Also, some of the tools used require a premium subscription for use, being a student it's not possible for us to buy the premium software but we try to make the best out of the available resources we have.

What tools, coding languages, hardware, software did you use to develop your project?

Application Development :-

  1. Flutter by google :- We use flutter to develop our application because flutter provides us the platform to create an application for multi platforms ( Android . IOS and Web ) using the same code base and our application can easily be migrated in cross platforms.
  2. Google Firebase ( As Backend ) – We use google firebase services for our application backend. Google Firebase provides a good platform as a backend and also make interfacing easy and friendly with NoSQL data structure and our favorite google analytics to track the application.
  3. Google ML-vision Toolkit - We use the google ML vision toolkit for object detection in our application. Also, we will develop our new training data soon and use google ml vision to train and use the new personalized API for our application.
  4. Android Studio :- For IDE support we use Android studio. Official IDE by google for android app development.
How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

It has become so common fact that pollution is rising continuously. The term ‘pollution’ means the manifestation of any unsolicited foreign substance in something. When we talk about pollution on earth, we refer to the contamination that is happening of the natural resources by various pollutants. All this is mainly caused by human activities which harm the environment in ways more than one. Therefore, an urgent need has arisen to tackle this issue straightaway. Thus, our created application will spread awareness in some amusing and interactive way. We have examined several different NASA satellite data in order to do so. That sends us data on different contaminants, including So2, Co2, even melting glaciers, the state of the atmosphere , soil, and oceans, as well as their interactions with and with solar radiation.

We listed some of the NASA satellites that we have been using here.

Aura

Aura's four instruments study the atmosphere's chemistry and dynamics. Aura's measurements enable us to investigate questions about ozone trends, air-quality changes and their linkage to climate change. Aura's measurements also provide accurate data for predictive models and useful information for local and national agency decision-support systems.
